A Sparkle of Hope: the story behind the painting
April 28, 2026 - 3 min read
A Sparkle of Hope is an original watercolour inspired by time beside the water at Buckland Lakes near Reigate in Surrey. The painting holds the feeling of seeing a small brightness on the surface of the lake and realising that even a gentle glimmer can change the mood of a whole place.
A quiet moment by the water
I remember being drawn to the quiet balance of the scene rather than one dramatic detail. The water moved softly, the trees held the edge of the lake, and the light kept appearing in small shifting places. It felt like somewhere the eye could rest for a while.
Why the painting matters
That kind of stillness matters to me. I often paint because a place gives me room to breathe before I have found the words for what I am carrying. With this piece, the water became a way to hold refuge: reflection, distance, air, and a little brightness that would not disappear.
Where hope appears
The title came from that bright opening in the painting. Hope does not always arrive as certainty. Sometimes it is only a sparkle, but that can still be enough to help you keep going.
This painting sits close to the reason I make watercolours. I want the work to feel calm enough to live with, but honest enough to acknowledge that calm is often something we find carefully, in small moments.
If A Sparkle of Hope speaks to you, you can view the artwork in the gallery and enquire gently about the original, prints, cards, or where the piece might sit in your home.
